WHY OUR WORK MATTERS
Across the Chicagoland region, many children and families continue to face significant barriers that limit access to education, stable housing, and basic needs. In Cook County alone, approximately one in four children is at risk of hunger, highlighting the ongoing challenge of food insecurity for thousands of families. At the same time, more than 73,000 Illinois students experience homelessness each year, demonstrating the widespread impact of housing instability on young people and their ability to succeed in school. Educational outcomes also reflect these challenges, with many students struggling to meet grade-level proficiency in reading and math and facing obstacles such as chronic absenteeism and limited access to enrichment opportunities. In some Chicago neighborhoods, nearly half of children grow up in low-income households, increasing the likelihood that they will encounter barriers to academic success, career readiness, and long-term economic mobility. These interconnected challenges underscore the importance of community-driven solutions that strengthen education, youth development, food access health and wellness, and family stability-ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS TO EXCEL
Across the Chicagoland region, these challenges are not just statistics-they represent real children and families working to overcome barriers to education, stability, and opportunity. At the Knox Family Foundation (KNOX), we believe that every young person deserves the resources, mentorship, and support necessary to reach their full potential. Through our programs focused on education, youth leadership development, food and housing stability, health and wellness, and family empowerment, we are working to create pathways that help children succeed in school, build confidence as leaders, and grow into thriving members of their communities.
Addressing these challenges requires collective action. The Knox Family Foundation partners with community organizations, schools, and local leaders to deliver programs that provide meaningful and measurable impact. Support from donors, volunteers, and philanthropic partners allows us to expand access to tutoring and enrichment opportunities, strengthen youth leadership programs, stabilize families facing food and housing insecurity, and connect parents with critical resources. Together, we can ensure that children and families across our communities have the opportunities they need to learn, lead, and excel.
